Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Workshop – July 13th and 15th – 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm ET

Course Level: Foundational
Duration: Two Evenings (7 Hours Total)
Delivery: Virtual – Live via Microsoft Teams
CPEs: 7

Course Overview

Join ISSA-NOVA for an intensive two-evening virtual “Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Workshop,” designed to provide federal employees, contractors, and supporting organizations with a practical understanding of the Federal government’s Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Program.

This workshop introduces participants to the purpose, structure, and requirements of the CUI Program established under Executive Order 13556 and implemented through 32 CFR Part 2002. Participants will learn how to identify, mark, safeguard, disseminate, store, and properly dispose of CUI while understanding the responsibilities of both Federal agencies and organizations that support the Federal Government.

The course examines the complete lifecycle of Controlled Unclassified Information, from its initial identification through final destruction, using practical examples and real-world scenarios. Participants will become familiar with the CUI Registry, CUI Basic and CUI Specified categories, dissemination controls, marking requirements, and safeguarding practices applicable to both physical and electronic information.

The workshop also explores the relationship between the CUI Program and other federal cybersecurity requirements, including NIST SP 800-171, CMMC, and contractor responsibilities for protecting sensitive government information. Participants will learn common mistakes organizations make when handling CUI and how to respond appropriately to unauthorized disclosures or handling incidents.

Designed for individuals with little or no prior knowledge of Controlled Unclassified Information, this workshop emphasizes practical application rather than legal or policy interpretation. Participants will leave with the knowledge and confidence needed to properly recognize and handle CUI in their daily work.
