Course Level: Foundational
Duration: 2 evenings (7 Hours Total)
Delivery: Virtual – Live via Microsoft Teams
Dates: November 24 & 26, 2025 (6:00 PM – 9:30 PM ET each evening)
CPEs: 7

Course Overview

Join ISSA-NOVA for an immersive, two-evening workshop designed to equip cybersecurity managers, SOC leaders, IT security professionals, and federal cyber practitioners with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to leverage generative AI in modern cybersecurity operations.

This workshop provides a comprehensive, manager-focused exploration of how generative AI—such as large language models (LLMs), diffusion systems, and multimodal AI—can be applied to strengthen cyber defense, enhance threat detection, streamline incident response, and support governance and risk management efforts. Participants will gain strategic insights into responsible adoption while understanding the unique risks and emerging threats associated with AI-enabled environments.

Led by Jim Wiggins, ISSA-NOVA President and Founder of the Federal IT Security Institute (FITSI), this program blends expert instruction, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and collaborative discussions to help cyber leaders confidently integrate generative AI capabilities into their organizational security programs.

Course Format

A blended learning experience combining:

  • Instructor-led lectures and practical demonstrations
  • Interactive discussions and real-world scenario analysis
  • Group activities focusing on AI use cases, risks, and integration
  • Practical exercises applying AI concepts to SOC and GRC workflows

Course Materials Include:

  • Expert Lectures
  • Demonstrations
  • Hands-on Lab Activities
  • Online Additional Resources

A detailed daily schedule will be provided prior to the workshop.

Learning Objectives

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand foundational concepts of generative AI, including LLMs, diffusion models, and multimodal systems, and how they apply to cybersecurity.
  • Explain current and emerging uses of AI/ML in cybersecurity operations, including SOC workflows, threat detection, and incident response.
  • Identify key generative AI use cases such as anomaly detection, predictive analytics, vulnerability assessment, and threat hunting.
  • Recognize and evaluate cyber threats enabled by generative AI, including AI-driven phishing, deepfakes, adversarial attacks, and data poisoning.
  • Interpret major AI-related policy and regulatory frameworks, including the NIST AI RMF, EU AI Act, and organizational governance requirements.
  • Integrate AI risk management, data governance, privacy, and assurance practices into cybersecurity programs and operational processes.
  • Assess and compare AI-augmented cybersecurity tools, including SIEM/SOAR enhancements, decision-support systems, and automated playbooks.
  • Establish evaluation criteria for selecting and monitoring AI-enabled solutions, considering performance, bias, transparency, and vendor risk.
  • Develop a strategic roadmap for organizational AI adoption, including workforce upskilling, responsible use, and long-term cyber defense planning.
